We all get in those moods where we feel low on energy or just can’t seem to get motivated. It’s completely normal, after all, we’re all human!
There’s a lot of talk today about being positive or shifting your energy – and while I believe in this wholeheartedly – what can feel missing are the steps on how to actually do that.
Here are the simple practices I use to shift my energy – developed over years of trial and error. Sometimes it’s the simple things that create the biggest shifts.
1. Complete one small task
Often times when our mood gets low we gravitate towards the couch. Doing daily tasks or chores can feel like the last thing we want to do. However, I’ve found when I force myself to get up and just do tiny productive things like cleaning a dish that’s been sitting there all day or making the bed I immediately feel better.
2. Meditation with a reward
It can be hard to sit in silence with everything going on in life, I get it. Even when you feel like you’ve got no time, a few short minutes of meditation can make a difference in your ability to see things objectively. I’ve been meditating daily and have noticed a big change in overall mood, increased productivity, and a more balanced state. When I first started, I promised myself a reward to encourage the new habit. I gave myself a side of pasta with my dinner (my favorite) as the reward for meditating. Over time you’ll feel so good, you won’t even need the reward to start a practice.
The Calm app is a great one to get started with.
3. Write it down
The benefits of journaling outweigh the 15 minute commitment it takes to get any negative thoughts out of your head and onto the page. I’ve had some major “ah-hah” moments through journaling. The practices have provided a lot of clarity in my most confusing times.
To get started ask yourself, “What am I most proud of today?” or “What triggered me today to feel a bit off?”
4. Call a friend
Having a conversation with one of those friends that just gets you is the best feeling in the world. When I do this my mood is instantly lifted and I feel inspired and excited after having a real conversation or just catching up.
5. Re-energize your space
Changing the vibe in my space can have a major impact on how I feel. I love a salt lamp and a candle – it’s so relaxing and completely changes the energy in the room.
And lastly, remind yourself that when you’re feeling disempowered or just in an “off” mood, it will always pass (and probably a lot sooner than you think).
